Crews battle tricky course for medals in first regatta for 2017

MAGS rowers raced against a tide, strong head winds and a bendy course at their first regatta of the year at Auckland Rowing Club at East Tamaki on Sunday.

The conditions made the 1500 metre course more like a challenging two kilometres.

The competition was small, with only four schools competing, and despite the challenging conditions they claimed a swag of medals.

Some of the crews raced against seniors and older age groups and acquitted themselves well on an unfamiliar course.

Meanwhile, at the Christmas regatta in December our novice boys eight rowed into third place in a thrilling A final, nudging ahead of Auckland Grammar.

Our U16 boys eight also placed third, just ahead of St Andrews.  Both crews had to fight hard to gain their placings against top rowing schools.

Overall, four crews made A finals and four crews made B finals, including our senior rowers Megan Farquhar and Mark Lawrence who were rowing for WERC in their U18 single events.

We were very proud to have 8 crews make it through at such a big event, which had tough qualifying criteria.  A number of other crews only just missed out.
